Hampden-Sydney College is located in Southside Virginia between Tidewater, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the James River. The historic 1340-acre campus lies five miles south of historic Farmville, the county seat of Prince Edward County and home to Longwood University. It is approximately 60 miles southwest of Richmond, 50 miles due east of Lynchburg, and 60 miles southeast of Charlottesville.

On March 31, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) visited Hampden-Sydney to deliver the Ron L. Heinemann Lecture in the History of the American South.

A Union-Philanthropic Literary Society (UPLS) monument was constructed adjacent to the Watkins Bell Tower, honoring the oldest debating society in continuous operation.
