Staying fit, healthy, and active is easy with TigeRec. In addition to using the Fitness Center and the Leggett swimming pool, students have access to group fitness classes, racquetball courts, a disc golf course, and intramural sports.
On home football game days, the fitness center and basketball courts will open at 4 pm, and the pool will be closed: Sept. 7, Sept. 21, Oct. 5, Oct. 26, Nov. 16
The Fitness Center is located in Kirby Field House. It includes a Cardio-Theatre system with seven 32" televisions that offer viewing to seven treadmills, seven elliptical trainers, five bicycles, two stairclimbers, and one Concept II rower.
The Fitness Center also caters to the weightlifter with a complete line of free weight equipment, Hammer Strength systems, and LifeFitness selectorized equipment. There is also a place to work the important core muscles (abs, lower back, etc.).The Aerobics Room (located on the second floor) is stocked with the latest group exercise and personal use fitness equipment. There are three refurbished racquetball courts.
Aquatics
Leggett Pool is open to the Hampden-Sydney community for recreational use and lap swimming.
General Policies
All patrons must enter through the Fitness Center
No one is allowed in the pool unless a lifeguard is on duty
Horseplay, such as running, shoving, and dunking are is not permitted
Diving is permitted only in designated areas and may be restricted at any time for any reason. Young children must be supervised when using the diving board
Large inner tubes and floats are not permitted
An adult must accompany children wearing water wings or infant/child flotation devices
Legal dependants under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a parent/legal gaurdian at all times
No one should hang, sit, or stand on the ropes dividing the swimming lanes
Food, glass containers, and metal objects are not permitted in the pool area
Persons with sores are not permitted in the pool
Appropriate swim attire must be worn. Infants and toddlers must wear water appropriate diapers
No alcohol
Patrons MUST take showers prior to swimming in the pool
Pool Party Requests All those interested in hosting a pool party at TigeRec should contact Betsy Leonard, eleonard@hsc.edu to make reservations. Reservations should be made at least two weeks in advance of your party date.
Inclement Weather/Storm Policy Leggett Pool follows a strict Storm Policy outlined by the American Red Cross for lightening and thunder. The policy states that at first sighting of lightening or sound of thunder a thirty (30) minute period will start until thunder and lightening have stopped and left the area. Throughout the summer months, we experience inclement weather and may need to close the pool. The director is the only person who can close the pool or cut staff in the event of rain or inclement weather. Refunds are not available for rain days.
Fitness
The Fitness Center gives you the opportunity to work out individually and in group fitness classes.
The Hampden-Sydney College Disc Golf Course features nine par-3 holes that challenge players with water hazards, tight wooded fairways, and medium distance drives. The total distance of the course covers 3/4 of a mile that begins and ends right outside the Kirk Athletic Center. The course accommdates both beginners and experts alike and is open to all Hampden-Sydney area community members.
Community Memberships
Community (Tiger Club) memberships are available to the public on a 1-year and 6-month basis. Both Single and Family Memberships are offered. A family membership is classified by immediate family members only (i.e. spouse and legal dependants). Below is a further explanation of our policies regarding legal dependants.
Legal dependents: To participate in activities at the Fitness Center, legal dependents must be 14 years of age or older. Legal dependents between 14 and 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Legal dependents 13 years of age and under may not participate in activities. If they accompany a member, they may sit in the lounge/vending area. Exceptions to the age rules may be made on a case-by-case basis by the Fitness Center Director.
There is an annual fee for the period of July 1 - June 30. Six month memberships can also be purchased from July 1 - December 31st and January 1st -June 30th.Tiger Recreation does not provide day passes or monthly memberships. Individuals who elect to join during other months of the year will receive a prorated membership applicable until the next renewal date.
