Volume 13 of The Hampden-Sydney Journal of the Sciences is an engaging collection of research articles from Hampden-Sydney students and their advisors and feature pieces on topics of local and current scientific interest. New this year is a collection of career retrospectives from recently-retired H-SC STEM faculty members and an interview by Richard Jones ’25 with Dr. Alexander “Sasha” Rabchevsky ’88, professor of physiology at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, where he discusses his experiences at H-SC and his work to overcome adversity as a paraplegic.
“The Hampden-Sydney Journal of the Sciences is a unique opportunity for our students to gain experience in writing, editing, and publishing scientific works based on original research and also current scientific societal issues,” says McGavacks Professor of Biology and Director of Undergraduate Research Mike Wolyniak. “I have been very impressed with the creativity of our student editors and writers in coming up with new types of articles for this and future issues.
The 2024 edition of the Journal was curated by editors-in-chief Nathan Cabrera ’24 and Connor Eickelman ’24, and editors Ben Currin ’25, Ethan Currin ’25, Pierce Gemborys ’25, Camden Libby ’26, Henry Loehr ’24, Matthew Miscikowski ’26, Evan Old ’26, and Brown Riggins ’26.
