Hampden-Sydney hosted eight other collegiate institutions for the inaugural Regional Registrar Conference on Wednesday, November 6.

people gathered around a table in a conference roomThe conference, held in Pannill Commons, addressed a range of topics, including office politics, process improvement, graduation, diploma distribution, Virginia state transcripts, and course completion timelines. Attendees had the opportunity to learn from each other, participate in professional development, and explore ways to enhance their institutions' overall operations.

“The topics were incredibly informative, and it was reassuring to know that other institutions are open to discussing many of the challenges we regularly encounter,” Registrar Whitney Merinar says. “One of the registrars was new to the role and was thrilled to be there and absorb all the knowledge in the room. It was also fantastic to see representatives from larger institutions engaging with and offering valuable advice to the smaller institutions.”

The conference was the brainchild of Merinar, who aimed to create an event where colleagues could come together, engage in professional development, and enhance their operations.

“When I was a registrar in Pennsylvania, we had a regional group of institutions that met biannually, rotating host locations for half-day conferences and offering an easy way to gain professional development,” Merinar says. “After joining Hampden-Sydney, I strived to create a similar event to offer such opportunities. When I reached out to other institutions about forming a group, the response was unanimously positive, opening valuable opportunities for professional development and networking for Associate Registrar Cindy Toone, myself, and many others across institutions.”

This conference stands as a strong example of collaboration among higher education institutions committed to improving communication and creating new opportunities. By bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise, it paves the way for innovative solutions and strengthens partnerships that benefit students, faculty, and staff across campuses.

“I truly enjoyed organizing this inaugural conference,” Merinar says. “Everyone I collaborated with on campus was fantastic, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. There’s strong interest in continuing the conference, with discussions underway about where it could be hosted next.”

The dedication, confidence, and drive of our ambitious staff continually propel the College forward, enriching learning, enhancing communication, and fostering collaboration. The commitment of the registrar's office made this inaugural conference a success and set the stage for future gatherings that will continue to enhance the College and strengthen our connections.
