Scouts had the chance to enhance their skills in a range of courses including chemistry, citizenship, electronics, emergency preparedness, environmental science, first aid, robotics, sustainability, swimming, and weather, allowing them to earn up to two merit badges throughout the day. Spanning the Hill, Scouts and adult leaders were able to soak up the beautiful campus and engage in an atmopshere of sound learning.
“We had a really good Merit Badge College Day,” said Director of High Adventure Scott Schmolesky. “While there is quite a bit of prep work, it is well worth the effort. Having students, faculty and staff assisting with the day really reflects on why Hampden Sydney College is a special place. It’s an excellent opportunity to connect with the scouting community in a very impactful way.”
As an outdoorsman, Schmolesky takes pride in assisting the Scouts and helping them grow and learn. By helping coordinate activities and courses, he enables the Scouts to experience a setting that values the outdoors and education, fostering a strong relationship between the Scouts and the College.
“This is a great way to introduce Scouts to what Hampden-Sydney has to offer,” Schmolesky said. “Ultimately, you hope that as the scouts grow older, they may consider attending.”
After 12 years, the Merit Badge College Day continues to thrive, standing as a testament to Hampden-Sydney's dedication to developing well-rounded, motivated, and engaged individuals, and showcasing the enduring spirit and commitment of both the College and its participants. For any Eagle Scout who enrolls, Hampden-Sydney offers an annual scholarship of $30,000, nurturing their love and passion for learning and the outdoors while fostering a sense of stewardship for the environment and a deep appreciation for the value of lifelong learning.
