Hampden-Sydney's two teams placed first and second out of six teams representing three schools: Hampden-Sydney College, Christopher Newport University (CNU), and Berry College.
Teams competed in six distinct interactive one-hour challenges, based on the CLC’s leadership curriculum. Teams were graded on both their results and their process by students at Berry College's MBA program.
Especially significant about this impressive showing is that Hampden-Sydney’s teams were coached by students. Hampden-Sydney’s student coaches were Kent Bero '25, Adam Brazil '25, and Zach Eason '26, who are taking a class titled Leading Teams in Competition (INDS 485), taught by Director of the Wilson Center Vinton Bruton. In their capacity as coaches, these students recruited teams of six students, then planned and implemented weekly practice sessions for several weeks prior to competition.
“CNU has won this competition at least once and is always a tough competitor, so I was thrilled that both our teams edged them out,” says Bruton. “More importantly, I think the guys learned a lot through the opportunity to deliberately practice leadership. But best of all, they represented the College well throughout the event. The director of Berry’s leadership program pulled me aside to complement our guys on their poise and great energy.”
Team Garnet, coached by Kent and Adam, finished first overall with 1022 points, followed by Team Grey, coached by Zach, with 992 points.
