Members of Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire & Rescue exemplify the true spirit of bravery and service, and the Hampden-Sydney community is immensely grateful for the protection and care they offer to our campus and the surrounding area. In response to Hurricane Helene, their dedication to service has been underscored as they collaborated with other fire departments to support a Tennessee fire department that has lost everything.
In this impressive initiative, Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire & Rescue participated alongside various fire departments in Prince Edward County and the Abingdon Fire Department in Abingdon, Virginia. They gathered a wide range of equipment, including power tools, various hand tools, large ventilation fans, and self-contained breathing apparatus gear, which comprised 30 air tanks and rapid intervention bags. Once the equipment was gathered, the crew transported it to a central hub in Rice, Virginia, where it was then sent to Abingdon, Virginia, to support the rebuilding of the Tennessee station.
“The equipment and tools we are sending will significantly aid in the rebuilding of a station that has lost everything,” said Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire & Rescue President and Operations Captain Chris Call. “This support will also empower them to continue assisting their communities and help others who have been affected.”
Hurricane Helene caused significant devastation in several states, including Florida, Tennessee, and North Carolina. The storm prompted a coordinated response from various fire departments to assist those affected, reflecting the strength of solidarity and service in challenging times.
This same commitment to service is seen in the many student members of Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire & Rescue. Among them is Dakota Fink ’27, who has been with the department for a year and is dedicated to making a positive impact.
“It feels great knowing I could help a department in need,” Dakota said. “I believe it’s essential to support others during a crisis, and seeing the severe impact on many areas really makes you understand just how much that support is needed.”
The unwavering dedication and bravery of our local fire and rescue teams do not go unnoticed. Their commitment to protecting and serving our campus and the broader community, especially during times of crisis, is a testament to their selflessness. Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire & Rescue is a nonprofit organization that operates entirely on a volunteer basis. Although it is not directly related to the College, it is located on the outskirts of campus, adjacent to Hampden-Sydney College Facilities, and serves an area of over 75 square miles. It provides both fire and emergency services and is designated as Company Two, serving alongside the Town of Farmville.
