Hampden-Sydney Baseball captain Alex Fitz-Hugh ’26 has been named to the Lou Gehrig Community Impact team, which recognizes the character and community impact of college baseball players.

Introduced by Phi Delta Theta fraternity in partnership with the Live Like Lou Foundation, the team continues Lou Gehrig’s legacy, which began with his baseball career at Columbia University.

Players are chosen through a nomination process, where each NCAA baseball head coach may submit a candidate. Nominees are evaluated based on three key criteria: a strong commitment to community service and philanthropy, embodiment of the generous spirit and character of Lou Gehrig, and contributing significantly to their team's success. After all nominations are received, the Lou Gehrig Foundation chooses the nine honorees, with the player who collected the highest number of votes by the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award Voting Committee named as captain.

“When it came to nominating one of our players, Alex was a clear choice,” says Head Baseball Coach Michael Mulvey. “Our coaching staff does not select team captains; it is a player-voted award, and Alex was chosen as a team captain for us. He is a vocal leader who leads by example. He is prompt, organized, and communicates at a high level.”

“He is heavily involved in the community and on campus, all while being a standout player for us,” Mulvey continues. “He embodies everything the College stands for and is a great example of someone fully giving himself to the Hampden-Sydney community.”

Alex is committed to upholding a strong and generous spirit, serving others, and being an engaged citizen while striving to be the best Hampden-Sydney man he can be. As a pitcher and captain of the Hampden-Sydney Baseball team, his leadership shines on the field. Beyond baseball, Alex is deeply involved across campus, taking on leadership roles and participating in numerous clubs and organizations. He serves as president of the Minority Student Union (MSU), is a member of the President’s Men and the Garnet and Grey Society, and mentors students through the Brother4Brother and Elite Eagles programs. His contributions extend further as an intramural sports director, athletic training room assistant, resident advisor, student orientation leader, and student photographer. Alex has also played an active role in the Intercultural Affairs Committee (IAC) and the Interfraternity Council Committee (IFC).

At Hampden-Sydney Baseball, we pride ourselves not only on coaching quality players but also on helping to foster better men, husbands, fathers, brothers, and more. This award is a testament to more than Alex's ability on the field; it is a great reflection of his personality, character, and upbringing.

I feel a sense of accomplishment, but at the same time, I know there is more I can do, and I’m ready to take action.”

“Ever since I stepped onto Hampden-Sydney's campus, I've wanted to be known as someone who can help make things happen,” Alex continues. “Since arriving, I have joined many organizations that are important to me. Along the way, I’ve been given opportunities to lead from within and take action in the communities around me. My mom has always taught me to be a person of impact, and since passing through the Hampden-Sydney gates, my journey toward becoming that person has grown each year. I will continue striving to make a meaningful impact on others.”

Alex exemplifies the ideals of a Hampden-Sydney man, serving the community with grace, selflessness, and outstanding leadership. Committed to uplifting those around him, he stands as a beacon of character and positivity.

“It is a tremendous honor to have someone from our program represented with this award,” Mulvey says. “It reflects selflessness and a genuine care for others. At Hampden-Sydney Baseball, we pride ourselves not only on coaching quality players but also on helping to foster better men, husbands, fathers, brothers, and more. This award is a testament to more than Alex's ability on the field; it is a great reflection of his personality, character, and upbringing.”
