The award is given by the Military Order of the Stars and Bars, an historical association of descendants of the Southern Officer Corps during the War Between the States. Named in honor of soldier, newspaperman, and poet Henry Timrod, this award is given for contributions in fine art, literature, scholarly articles, cinema, art, theatre, poetry, and other appropriate works.
Specifically cited for Eanes' nomination were his books, monographs, and presentations, which include studies on the battles of Sailor's Creek and the Staunton River Bridge, Virginia's Black Confederates, and his 2023 Memorial Day presentation for the Department of Conservation and Resources at Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Park titled “A Living Memorial to Reunion and Reconciliation.” Previous recipients include historical artist Mort Kunstler.
