Each year, scores of students dedicate their time to service, including the College’s Big Event. This year, more than 150 students stepped up, demonstrating their commitment to giving back during this day of service.

Students took part in community service projects both on and off campus. On the Hill, they helped clean up the High Adventure Course and joined a food packing event with Rise Against Hunger at the Kirk Athletic Center. Off campus, several fraternities participated in highway cleanups, while other students volunteered at Twin Lakes State Park, installing a new kiosk and stacking wood. Additional efforts included clearing debris, raking leaves, trimming bushes, and moving and loading furniture.

Beyond volunteering the day of, many students contribute in a variety of ways to ensure the success of the Big Event, stepping up with both time and resources to make the day special. Whether it’s coordinating logistics or providing financial support, their efforts play a crucial role in the event’s success. Brandon Finch ’26 is a prime example of this, utilizing his leadership skills and commitment to the Hampden-Sydney community to help make the day a success.

“As secretary-treasurer, I was able to allocate the funds needed for the Big Event shirts,” Brandon says. “I had some reserve funds that I felt would be well used to support this event, and I was happy to contribute. Providing shirts for volunteers helps generate interest and encourage more participation, so I was glad to help make the day even more impactful.”

“In addition, it felt good to participate in the day of service,” Brandon continues. “I realize I am privileged in being here and that I have a responsibility to give back to the community when I have the chance. I helped with the packing of 10,000 meals, and I felt fulfilled to be able to help many different families receive meals that they may have otherwise not had. “

Individually or in groups, participants aim to complete 250 hours of service by April 28, 2025. So far, 3,387 hours have been logged, generating an economic impact of $113,440—a powerful reflection of the dedication and generosity of members of the Hampden-Sydney community.

“Seeing students learn and grow from their service experiences is a good feeling,” says Director of Student Affairs Operations, Orientation, and Civic Engagement Sandy Cooke. “It is vital to continue our good work in the community, as this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Tigers Serve Program. In order to continue living the values of the founders of our College from nearly 250 years ago, we must give back to our community by maintaining and serving just as they did.”

Hampden-Sydney continues its long-standing commitment to improving and serving the surrounding communities, a tradition that has long thrived. Led by dedicated students, faculty, and staff, the College will persist as a shining example of service to others, with its impact reaching far beyond the next 250 years.
